Gilas Pilipinas confirm final 12 for FIBA World Cup

 

The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas announced on Wednesday afternoon the 12 players who will represent Philippines in the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 that kicks off on Friday.

There were no surprises in the final Gilas Pilipinas roster, which is composed of the following:

 

The biggest basketball event of the year is happening in the Philippines: the 2023 FIBA World Cup!

The Philippines will host some of the world’s best basketball players as they vie for the Naismith Trophy and the chance to earn the title of being the best basketball team in the world.

Tournament format and results

The World Cup is composed of 32 teams who have earned the right to play through continental qualifiers held from 2022 up to early this year.

The teams were earlier divided in eight groups of four and will play in four different venues across the Philippines, Japan, and Indonesia.

 

Newsome played in the three tuneup matches in the country ahead of the FIBA World Cup. 

On Thursday, Gilas head coach Chot Reyes said breaking the news to Newsome, Thirdy Ravena, Calvin Oftana, and Ray Parks, was one of the most difficult things he had to do as a coach.

The final 12 of Gilas Pilipinas is composed of Rhenz Abando, Japeth Aguilar, Jordan Clarkson, AJ Edu, June Mar Fajardo, Jamie Malonzo, CJ Perez, RR Pogoy, Dwight Ramos, Kiefer Ravena, Kai Sotto, and Scottie Thompson.

Gilas will open their campaign in the World Cup against Dominican Republic on Friday at the Philippine Arena, followed by Angola on August 27 and Italy on August 29.
